About

Modern

Over the years I have been working on several modern projects, guitars which deviate from traditional archtop design. These instruments have typically featured wood binding instead of plastic, modern shaped soundholes in the place of traditional f-holes, and have shed their pearl inlay and non-resonant materials to realize a cleaner, more streamlined look.

These instruments have been designed from specific points of departure, be they art-deco, minimalist, or (coming soon) art nouveau. They have been designed sometimes with specific players, and always with specific tonal goals in mind. My aim has always been tone first with these instruments; they are made with the best woods that I am able to procure, and are produced one at a time.

Bee Front
Bee Back. Bee Headstock. Bee Detail. .

This is a new, open-headstock design I’d wanted to try for some time. I made this guitar with a 17” body, and used red maple for the rim and back, making for a shouty, robust tone.

Rosine Front
Rosine Back. Rosine Headstock. Rosine Detail. Rosine Detail. Rosine Detail.

The Rosine is the result of a client asking me to use Jimmy D’Aquisto’s Avante Garde as a starting point. Because I’d had some experience with 2 of the 6 A.G.’s in existence, I took him up on his challenge.

Rosine Sepia Front
Rosine Sepia Back. Rosine Sepia Headstock. Rosine Sepia Detail. .

Recently completed, this new Rosine was requested with a sunburst finish. Perhaps it was all the poetic-realist films I’d been watching, but I felt a warm, sepia tone was appropriate.

These designs are available for custom order, as are others which will be added to this ongoing series.
