The Model 17/Excel is a tribute to the guitars Jimmy D’Aquisto was making in the mid 1980’s. I struggled for a name for this model for years, then realized that the design is my attempt to understand and faithfully execute what D’Aquisto was doing at that time, and to call it anything other than Excel would be a disservice to all the man did. This guitar is made of choice European tonewoods – I source most of my spruce from the Tyrolean region of Italy and Austria, and the maples come primarily from Austria and the former Yugoslavia. The result of this procurement of exotic woods and meticulous working is a guitar with a very contemporary tone, with fullness, roundness, depth and character, and a great deal of sustain. The sound is not quick to leave the player, but instead envelopes the player, creating a feeling of oneness between performer, instrument, and music. The consummate instrument for the improviser, which will take your playing, writing, and dreaming, to a higher precipice than previously imagined.
